Hi!  I’m Ben Director of Photography and CEO of BlueJay Pixel House.  I grew up on a cattle ranch just south of Sun Valley, ID, where I learned about hard work from day after day of building fences, moving irrigation pipe, and keeping the cows healthy and safe.  Farm life taught me a lot of lessons, but I’d say the biggest one is how to improvise.

The ability to roll with the punches and use what’s available has really served me in my film career.  I see it when it comes to budgeting, choosing gear, collaboration on and off set, and thinking outside the box conceptually.  I’ve used this skill in my personal life, too, as I long-distance dated my (now) wife, remodeled a house on my own, and moved my family to Portland after a decade in LA.

If improvising is my strength, maybe it’s no surprise that my favorite genre is documentary.  I’ve enjoyed commercials (with clients such as Nickelodeon, Sony, Moncler), shorts, and the occasional music video.  Honestly, if it’s an interesting concept and/or has heart, I’m into it (and it never hurts if the crew is fun).

Now that my wife and I have moved to Portland to raise our family, I spend time in both the Pacific Northwest and sunny Los Angeles, expanding my film network in the PNW, and serving my contacts in SoCal.

Thanks for going on this adventure with me, and I hope you’ve gotten a feel for who I am.  If you think there’s a project we’d match up on, get at me!
